Behind the Scenes: Uncovering the Past (ages 10 – 12)

Uncovering the Past camps are perfect for kids who love investigation and discovery. These programs bring participants into places that the general public doesn’t get to see such as the archaeology lab, attics and basements in historic houses and collections storage. Activities simulate the real work of museum professionals and provide one of a kind experiences for history loving kids.

Archaeology Adventure
Uncover the secrets of the past left behind by people from long ago. Campers learn the basics of archaeological investigation as they take part in a realistic simulated excavation.  Discover how to use the tools and equipment that archaeologists use in the field. Then get an up close look at real artifacts as you examine and help to clean objects uncovered at some of the museum’s archaeological sites.

Building Detectives
You know how to read a mystery book, but can you read and solve the mysteries of a building?  Discover how buildings can teach us about the people who lived long ago.  Go behind the scenes to explore attics and basements in historic homes, build a model of an 18th-century post-and-beam house, venture on an architectural scavenger hunt and unlock the secrets of Strawbery Banke’s unrestored homes.

Young Curators
Examine real historical artifacts up close and learn to uncover the historical tales that they have to tell.  Then work with professional curators to put together a museum exhibition that will share your discoveries with Strawbery Banke’s visitors.  Participate in an auction, take field trips to Portsmouth’s historic sites and journey behind the scenes at the Collections Center.  The week will culminate with the opening of the Young Curator Exhibition, which will remain on display for the remainder of the season.
