These camps are designed to look at history thematically rather than chronologically allowing participants to delve deeper into one topic and trace it through time. Campers are encouraged to use their imaginations and creativity to learn about the evolution of sports and games, cooking through time or how people survived without modern medical knowledge.

Kids in the Kitchen
Investigate how foods have been grown, harvested, preserved, cooked and eaten through time. Try out a variety of period recipes on the hearth and 19th-century cookstove. Learn about convenience foods from hardtack to TV dinners. Discover foods that immigrants brought from all over the world, explore how dining etiquette has changed through time and even create and cook your own recipes. At the end of the week, campers will have full stomachs and a variety of recipes to try at home. Next offered summer 2023

Sports and Games
From cards and board games to sports and games of skill, campers will discover how people have entertained themselves from ancient to modern times. In addition to learning dozens of new games, participants will have time each day to make some of their own to take home and share with family and friends. The week will culminate with “Camp Olympics” where campers not only learn the history of this international competition; they can compete in the activities they have practiced throughout the week. Next offered summer 2024

Survivor Strawbery Banke
Were the good old days really that good? How did people manage without the technological and medical advances of today? During the week, campers will examine some of the struggles that people faced at different eras in history from death and disease to slavery, fires and natural disasters. Activities include experimentation and problem solving, scavenger hunts, historical simulations and walking excursions around Portsmouth. Find out if you have what it takes to survive the past! Offered July 25 – 29, 2022
